MacroPore Biosurgery

MacroPore Biosurgery was a medical technology company that specialized in the development of bioresorbable implants for reconstructive surgery. Founded in 1996 and based in San Diego, the company produced thin-film protective sheets and fixation devices made from polylactic acid, designed to support bone healing before being naturally absorbed by the body. In 2002, the company expanded into regenerative medicine through the acquisition of StemSource, gaining access to adipose-derived stem cell technology. MacroPore sold its core biosurgery product lines to Medtronic in 2004 to focus exclusively on its stem cell platform, the Celution System. Following this strategic shift, the company rebranded as Cytori Therapeutics in 2005, which later evolved into Plus Therapeutics.
