Marion Merrell Dow Research Institute

Marion Merrell Dow was a major pharmaceutical company formed in 1989 through the merger of Marion Laboratories and Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Dow Chemical. The Marion Merrell Dow Research Institute served as the organization's global R&D arm, maintaining significant research facilities in Kansas City, Cincinnati, and Strasbourg. The company was a leader in cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, successfully commercializing blockbuster products like the calcium channel blocker Cardizem and the non-sedating antihistamine Seldane. In 1995, the company was acquired by Hoechst AG for approximately $7.1 billion, eventually becoming a foundational component of the modern Sanofi. Its legacy includes the development of fexofenadine (Allegra), which became one of the most widely used allergy medications worldwide.
