Company intelligence / Profile preview
Marrow-Tech, later known as Advanced Tissue Sciences, was a pioneering biotechnology company that specialized in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Founded in 1987, the company developed a proprietary three-dimensional cell culture system designed to grow living human tissues on biodegradable scaffolds for therapeutic use. Its most prominent products were Dermagraft, a human fibroblast-derived dermal substitute for treating diabetic foot ulcers, and TransCyte, a bioengineered skin substitute for burn victims. Although the company was a leader in its field and secured multiple FDA approvals, it struggled with the high costs of commercialization and filed for bankruptcy in 2002. Its core assets and product lines were subsequently acquired by Smith & Nephew, marking a significant chapter in the history of bioengineered tissues.
