Company intelligence / Profile preview
Maui Medical was a medical device company based in Sunnyvale, California, that developed innovative endoscopic suturing technology. Founded by serial entrepreneur Dr. Amir Belson, the company focused on creating devices that allowed for precise, minimally invasive suturing in complex anatomical locations, such as the stomach. Its lead technology was designed for gastric volume reduction to treat obesity without the need for major surgery. The company's assets and technology were acquired in two stages: Ethicon Endo-Surgery (Johnson & Johnson) acquired the obesity-related applications in 2007, and Medtronic acquired the remaining suturing technology and the company itself in 2010 for $15 million. This technology has since been integrated into broader surgical tool portfolios for minimally invasive procedures.
