Medgenics was a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company that developed the Biopump platform, a proprietary technology for the sustained production and delivery of therapeutic proteins using the patient's own dermal tissue. The technology involved harvesting a small piece of skin, processing it into a micro-organ that secretes a specific protein, and re-implanting it into the patient to provide long-term therapy. Its lead candidate, EPODURE, was designed to treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease by producing erythropoietin. The company also explored applications for interferon-alpha in hepatitis C and other orphan diseases. In 2016, the company rebranded as Aevi Genomic Medicine to focus on genomic-based research and pediatric rare diseases. Aevi Genomic Medicine was subsequently acquired by Cerecor (now Avalo Therapeutics) in 2020.
