Medical Carbon Research Institute (MCRI), now known as On-X Life Technologies, is a medical device company specializing in the development of advanced prosthetic heart valves. Founded in 1994 by Dr. Jack Bokros, a pioneer in pyrolytic carbon technology, the company developed the On-X heart valve, which utilizes a proprietary form of pure pyrolytic carbon. This advanced material and the valve's unique design are engineered to mimic the performance of natural valves and reduce the risk of blood clots, potentially allowing patients to maintain lower levels of anticoagulation therapy. The company's products, including aortic and mitral valves, have received FDA approval and are used in cardiac centers globally. In 2015, the company was acquired by CryoLife (now Artivion) for approximately $130 million to expand its cardiovascular product portfolio.
