Company intelligence / Profile preview
MediChem Research was a prominent contract research organization (CRO) specializing in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery services for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Founded in 1987 and based in Lemont, Illinois, the company provided high-end synthetic chemistry, process development, and analytical services. In addition to its service-based business model, MediChem pursued internal drug discovery programs, most notably developing the anti-HIV candidate Calanolide A through a joint venture with the Sarawak government. The company's expertise in small molecule synthesis and chemical libraries made it an attractive target for genomic companies looking to bridge the gap between gene discovery and drug development. In 2002, MediChem Research was acquired by deCODE genetics in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $83.6 million. Following the acquisition, it operated as deCODE chemistry before the parent company's subsequent restructuring and divestitures.
