Medisorb Technologies International was a pioneering drug delivery company specializing in injectable sustained-release formulations using biodegradable polymer microspheres, specifically poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). Founded in 1990 as a joint venture between DuPont and Stolle Research & Development, the company developed the Medisorb platform, which allows for the controlled release of therapeutic agents over extended periods ranging from weeks to months. This technology became a cornerstone for several high-profile long-acting injectable (LAI) medications, including Risperdal Consta (risperidone) for schizophrenia, Vivitrol (naltrexone) for addiction, and Bydureon (exenatide) for type 2 diabetes. In 1996, Medisorb was acquired by Alkermes, which utilized the technology to transform into a leading CNS-focused biopharmaceutical company. The Medisorb platform remains one of the most successful examples of polymer-based drug delivery in the pharmaceutical industry.
