Company intelligence / Profile preview
Mendel BioEnergy Seeds was a specialized division of Mendel Biotechnology focused on the development and commercialization of dedicated energy crops for the biofuels industry. The company is best known for its "PowerCane" product, a proprietary seeded variety of Miscanthus x giganteus designed to significantly reduce the cost and complexity of establishing bioenergy plantations compared to traditional vegetative methods. Leveraging Mendel Biotechnology's advanced functional genomics platform, the division worked to enhance biomass yield, nutrient use efficiency, and stress tolerance in crops such as Miscanthus, switchgrass, and sorghum. Following the acquisition of Mendel Biotechnology by Koch Agronomic Services in 2014, the bioenergy seed assets were transitioned to Repreve Renewables, and active breeding for the PowerCane line has since concluded.
