Merck Frosst Center for Therapeutic Research

The Merck Frosst Center for Therapeutic Research was a world-class pharmaceutical R&D facility located in Kirkland, Quebec, and served as the Canadian research arm of Merck & Co. It gained international acclaim for the discovery of several major medications, most notably the asthma treatment Singulair and the COX-2 inhibitor Vioxx. The center specialized in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, focusing on respiratory, inflammatory, and bone-related diseases. At its peak, it was one of the largest private-sector biomedical research centers in Canada, employing over 300 scientists. In 2010, Merck announced the closure of the facility as part of a global restructuring effort following its merger with Schering-Plough. The site's closure marked a significant shift in the Canadian life sciences landscape, though its scientific contributions continue to impact global health.
