Neurogen Corporation was a biotechnology company based in Branford, Connecticut, specializing in the discovery and development of small molecule drugs for neurological and psychiatric disorders. The company was prominently recognized for its extensive collaboration with Merck & Co., which focused on developing vanilloid receptor (TRPV1) antagonists for the treatment of chronic and inflammatory pain. Neurogen utilized its proprietary Accelerated Intelligent Drug Discovery (AIDD) platform to efficiently identify and optimize drug candidates across various targets, including CRHR1 and GABA-A receptors. Despite advancing several programs into mid-stage clinical trials, the company faced financial challenges and was ultimately acquired by Ligand Pharmaceuticals in 2009.
