Merckle Biotec was the specialized biotechnology arm of the Merckle Group and Ratiopharm, based in Ulm, Germany. The company was a pioneer in the European biosimilars market, successfully developing and launching one of the first biosimilar versions of filgrastim. In 2010, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries acquired Ratiopharm, including Merckle Biotec, for approximately $5 billion. This acquisition provided Teva with advanced biologics manufacturing capabilities and a robust biosimilar pipeline, which have since been integrated into Teva's global biopharmaceutical operations.
