Company intelligence / Profile preview
Merganser Biotech Australia was the Australian subsidiary of Merganser Biotech, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing hepcidin mimetic peptides for rare hematological and iron overload diseases. The company's lead candidate, M012 (later known as LJPC-401), was a synthetic peptide designed to mimic the activity of hepcidin, the body's master regulator of iron, by binding to and inducing the degradation of ferroportin. Merganser Biotech Australia was primarily responsible for conducting early-phase clinical trials in Australia, leveraging the country's R&D tax incentives and clinical trial infrastructure. In 2017, the parent company was acquired by La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company for an upfront payment of $20 million and potential milestones totaling $200 million. Development of the lead asset was eventually discontinued in 2020 after a Phase 2 trial in beta thalassemia failed to meet its primary endpoint.
