Merrell Down Research Institute

Merrell Dow Research Institute (MDRI) was the global research and development arm of Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, established in 1981 following the merger of Dow Chemical's pharmaceutical division and Richardson-Merrell. The institute was a powerhouse in drug discovery, operating major facilities in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Strasbourg, France. MDRI is best known for pioneering the development of non-sedating antihistamines, most notably Seldane (terfenadine), and the antiepileptic medication Sabril (vigabatrin). Its research also led to the discovery of eflornithine, a critical treatment for African sleeping sickness. Through a series of corporate consolidations involving Marion Laboratories, Hoechst, and Aventis, the institute's operations were eventually integrated into Sanofi. MDRI's legacy remains significant in the fields of medicinal chemistry and enzyme inhibition.
