Metallgesellschaft AG was a prominent German industrial conglomerate founded in 1881, historically centered on mining, non-ferrous metals, and engineering. During the late 20th century, the company maintained a significant presence in the life sciences and healthcare sectors through its ownership of Dynamit Nobel, which included the pharmaceutical division Madaus. The group also operated Lurgi, an engineering firm specializing in process technology for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and Chemetall, a leader in specialty chemicals. Following a major financial crisis in 1993 involving oil futures, the company underwent a comprehensive restructuring to focus on industrial technology. It was eventually renamed mg technologies ag in 2000 and became GEA Group AG in 2005. Today, its successor GEA Group is a leading global provider of equipment and process technology for the pharmaceutical and food industries.
