Metallicum

Metallicum was a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on the development of metal-binding therapeutics for rare diseases and oncology. Founded by Dr. George Brewer of the University of Michigan, the company specialized in copper-lowering therapies, specifically the small molecule tetrathiomolybdate. The lead program targeted Wilson's disease, a genetic disorder characterized by toxic copper accumulation, where the drug served as a potent decoppering agent. Additionally, the company explored the anti-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties of copper depletion for treating various cancers and inflammatory conditions. In 2006, Metallicum was acquired by Pipex Pharmaceuticals, which continued the development of its copper-lowering platform.
