Overview

MG Biotherapeutics was a joint venture formed in 2004 between Medtronic and Genzyme (now Sanofi) to develop innovative "combination products" for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. The company aimed to merge Genzyme's expertise in cell therapy with Medtronic's advanced medical device delivery systems, specifically focusing on repairing damaged heart tissue. Its lead program, the MAGIC (Myoblast Autologous Graft in Ischemic Cardiomyopathy) trial, utilized autologous skeletal myoblasts delivered via specialized catheters to treat patients with heart failure. However, the Phase 2 trial failed to demonstrate significant functional improvement and raised safety concerns regarding arrhythmias, leading to the discontinuation of the program and the venture's operations. MG Biotherapeutics remains a notable historical example of the strategic convergence between the biotechnology and medical device industries.
