Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center

Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center was a prominent research and teaching hospital located on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1881, it grew into one of the largest and most respected medical institutions in the United States, known for its significant contributions to medical research and clinical care. The hospital was a pioneer in neonatology, establishing the first station for the care of premature babies in the country, and served as a major teaching affiliate for the University of Chicago and later the University of Illinois. Following several decades of financial challenges and multiple changes in corporate ownership, the facility officially closed in 2009. The legacy of the institution continues through the Michael Reese Health Trust, which supports healthcare initiatives in the Chicago area.
