MicroMed Technology

MicroMed Technology was a medical device company that pioneered the development of miniaturized ventricular assist devices (VADs) for patients suffering from end-stage heart failure. The company's primary product, the DeBakey VAD, was an axial-flow pump based on technology co-developed by NASA and the legendary heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey. This device was significantly smaller than first-generation VADs, allowing for easier implantation and reduced patient discomfort. MicroMed successfully obtained CE Mark approval in Europe and conducted extensive clinical trials in the United States. In 2013, the company was acquired by ReliantHeart, which integrated the technology into its HeartAssist5 product line.
