Midland Medical Technologies

Midland Medical Technologies (MMT) was a specialized medical device company focused on the development of innovative orthopedic solutions for hip joint preservation and replacement. The company is most notable for the development of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) system, a metal-on-metal implant designed to provide a bone-conserving alternative to conventional total hip arthroplasty. Developed by surgeons Derek McMinn and Ronan Treacy, the BHR system became a global standard for hip resurfacing in active patients. In 2004, MMT was acquired by Smith & Nephew for approximately $67 million, which allowed for the global expansion and eventual FDA approval of the BHR technology. The acquisition solidified Smith & Nephew's position in the high-growth reconstructive surgery market.
