Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute

The Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI) was a specialized clinical facility in Bloomington, Indiana, dedicated to providing proton beam therapy for cancer patients. Launched as a joint venture involving Indiana University, the center utilized the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility to provide highly targeted radiation that minimized damage to surrounding healthy tissue. It was particularly noted for its work in pediatric oncology and treating tumors located near critical structures like the brain and spine. As one of the first proton therapy centers in the United States, it played a significant role in the early clinical adoption of this modality. The facility was rebranded as the IU Health Proton Therapy Center in 2011 and eventually closed its doors in December 2014 due to high operating costs and the emergence of newer facilities.
