Company intelligence / Profile preview
Miles Pharmaceuticals, originally a division of Miles Laboratories, was a prominent American pharmaceutical company headquartered in Elkhart, Indiana. The company gained global recognition for its consumer healthcare portfolio, including iconic brands such as Alka-Seltzer, One-A-Day vitamins, and Flintstones vitamins. Beyond consumer products, Miles was a leader in the diagnostics industry through its Ames division and in biological therapeutics following its acquisition of Cutter Laboratories. In 1978, the company was acquired by the German conglomerate Bayer, subsequently operating as Miles, Inc. to manage Bayer's U.S. assets. During this period, Miles was responsible for the U.S. launch of major products like the antibiotic Cipro. In 1995, the Miles name was officially retired as Bayer consolidated its global operations under a single corporate brand.
