Mitrionics

Mitrionics was a Swedish technology company that specialized in high-performance computing (HPC) acceleration using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The company developed the Mitrion Virtual Processor and the Mitrion-C parallel programming language, which allowed software developers to utilize FPGA hardware without needing traditional hardware design skills. Mitrionics gained significant traction in the life sciences sector by providing accelerated versions of bioinformatics tools, most notably NCBI BLAST, which achieved performance increases of up to 20 times over traditional processors. Headquartered in Lund, Sweden, the company partnered with major supercomputing firms like SGI, Cray, and Nallatech. Despite its early success and venture backing, the company ceased operations around 2018.
