Overview

Molecular Geodesics, Inc. was a pioneering biotechnology and materials science company founded in 1996 by Dr. Donald Ingber of Harvard Medical School. The company focused on the development of biomimetic materials and tissue engineering scaffolds based on the principles of "tensegrity"—a structural system of balanced tension and compression found in living cells and tissues. Utilizing proprietary "combinatorial geodesics" software and advanced 3D printing technologies like stereolithography, the company aimed to create high-strength, lightweight materials for medical implants, biodefense, and industrial applications. Although the company later changed its name to Tensegra, Inc. and eventually ceased operations, its work laid the foundation for modern biologically inspired engineering and the commercialization of organ-on-a-chip technologies.
