The Missouri University Research Reactor (MURR) is the highest-power university research reactor in the United States and a critical global supplier of medical radioisotopes. Operating 24 hours a day, 6.5 days a week, the facility is the sole U.S. producer of several essential isotopes, including Lutetium-177, Iodine-131, and Molybdenum-99, which are used in FDA-approved cancer treatments and diagnostic imaging. MURR provides active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to major pharmaceutical companies like Novartis and partners with biotech firms to develop next-generation radiopharmaceuticals. The facility is currently expanding through the "NextGen MURR" initiative, which aims to build a new 20-megawatt reactor to secure the domestic supply of nuclear medicine for decades to come.
