Company intelligence / Profile preview
MyoTec was a biotechnology company dedicated to the discovery and development of therapeutic agents for muscle-wasting diseases and regenerative medicine. Founded on pioneering research from the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University, the company focused on targeting myostatin, a negative regulator of skeletal muscle mass. Its lead program, a myostatin-inhibiting monoclonal antibody, was designed to treat various forms of muscular dystrophy and age-related muscle loss. MyoTec was acquired by Wyeth in 2002, which subsequently advanced the lead candidate, stamulumab (MYO-029), into Phase 2 clinical trials. Although the program was eventually discontinued due to lack of efficacy, MyoTec's early work established the foundational framework for the myostatin inhibition field in drug development.
