National Cell Culture Center

The National Cell Culture Center (NCCC) was a specialized resource center funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide large-scale mammalian cell culture and protein purification services to the biomedical research community. Operated by the Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute (formerly Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation), the center focused on scaling up the production of monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, and specialized cell lines for academic and government researchers. By providing access to industrial-scale bioreactors and bioprocessing expertise, the NCCC enabled scientists to obtain high-quality biological materials necessary for advanced preclinical studies that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive. The center served as a vital component of the U.S. research infrastructure for over two decades before its centralized funding was phased out in favor of commercial contract manufacturing alternatives.
