National Heritage Insurance

National Heritage Insurance Company (NHIC) was a prominent healthcare administration firm that served as a Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) and Medicaid claims processor for the U.S. government. For several decades, the company managed the processing and payment of Medicare Part A and Part B claims, provider education, and enrollment services across multiple states. Originally established as a subsidiary of Electronic Data Systems (EDS), NHIC was later part of Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Perspecta before being absorbed into Peraton. While it was a major player in the healthcare reimbursement landscape, its primary government contracts have since been transitioned to other administrative organizations. The company was instrumental in the early automation of state Medicaid and federal Medicare systems, handling billions of dollars in annual expenditures. A separate property and casualty insurance company of the same name, based in Illinois, was placed into liquidation in 2024.
