National Quality Care

National Quality Care was a medical technology company dedicated to developing innovative blood purification therapies, most notably the Wearable Artificial Kidney (WAK). The WAK was designed as a miniaturized, portable dialysis machine that patients could wear as a belt, allowing for continuous fluid removal and toxin clearance. This technology aimed to improve the quality of life for patients with end-stage renal disease by providing an alternative to traditional, stationary hemodialysis. The company successfully conducted early-stage clinical trials demonstrating the feasibility of its sorbent-based dialysate regeneration system. In 2007, the company's assets and intellectual property were acquired by Xcorporeal, which was subsequently acquired by Fresenius Medical Care in 2010. The development of the WAK represented a significant shift toward ambulatory care in nephrology.
