National Stem Cell Centre

The National Stem Cell Centre, later renamed the Australian Stem Cell Centre (ASCC), was established in 2002 as Australia's first Biotechnology Centre of Excellence. Headquartered in Melbourne, the centre was a major strategic initiative funded by the Australian Government to position the country as a global leader in regenerative medicine. It operated as a collaborative research hub, bringing together scientists from various universities and institutes to develop stem cell-based therapies for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and neurological disorders. The organization focused on both embryonic and adult stem cell research, as well as the ethical and regulatory frameworks surrounding these technologies. Despite its significant role in the Australian biotech ecosystem, the centre ceased operations in 2011 after its federal funding was not renewed.
