Nephrion

Nephrion was a biotechnology company focused on developing a bioartificial kidney to treat acute kidney injury (AKI). The company's lead technology was the Renal Assist Device (RAD), an extracorporeal system that incorporated living human renal tubule cells to provide metabolic and endocrine functions. This approach aimed to supplement traditional dialysis by addressing the complex physiological needs of patients with severe renal failure. Founded as a Flagship Pioneering company, Nephrion leveraged research from the University of Michigan to advance regenerative medicine in the nephrology space. Although the technology demonstrated clinical potential in early-stage trials, the company is no longer active.
