Neucel Specialty Cellulose was a Canadian manufacturer specializing in the production of high-purity dissolving wood pulp, a key raw material for the pharmaceutical and specialty chemical industries. Based in Port Alice, British Columbia, the company operated a sulfite pulp mill that produced high-alpha cellulose used to manufacture pharmaceutical excipients such as microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and methylcellulose. These products are essential for drug formulation, serving as binders, fillers, and coating agents in tablet production. Despite its role as a critical supplier in the global specialty cellulose market, the company faced significant financial and operational challenges. Neucel entered receivership in 2019 and subsequently ceased all manufacturing operations, leading to the closure of its Port Alice facility.
