Neuromedical Systems, Inc. (NSI) was a medical technology company that pioneered the use of neural network-based image processing for clinical diagnostics. The company's flagship product, the PAPNET Testing System, was an automated screening tool designed to improve the accuracy of Papanicolaou (Pap) smears by identifying potentially abnormal cells that might be missed by manual microscopic examination. By highlighting suspicious cells for review by cytotechnologists, PAPNET aimed to significantly reduce the false-negative rates associated with cervical cancer screening. Despite its innovative technology and FDA approval, the company faced significant commercial hurdles and reimbursement issues, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 1999. Its assets were subsequently acquired by TriPath Imaging, and the technology was later integrated into the diagnostic portfolios of Becton Dickinson.
