Neurosciences Research Foundation

The Neurosciences Research Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 by Nobel laureate Gerald M. Edelman to support fundamental research into the biological basis of brain function. The foundation established and operated The Neurosciences Institute (NSI), an independent research center that focused on high-level theoretical and experimental neuroscience, including the study of consciousness and memory. Originally based at Rockefeller University in New York, the foundation later moved to a renowned architectural complex in La Jolla, California, where it fostered an interdisciplinary 'monastery of science' environment. Following significant financial challenges and the death of its founder, the institute ceased its primary laboratory research operations in the early 2010s.
