NewBiotics was a biopharmaceutical company based in San Diego, California, specializing in the development of a novel class of enzyme-activated therapeutics. The company utilized its proprietary Enzyme-Catalyzed Therapeutic Activation (ECTA) platform to design small molecule prodrugs that are selectively activated by enzymes overexpressed in cancer cells, such as thymidylate synthase. This mechanism was intended to deliver high concentrations of cytotoxic agents directly to tumors while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. The company's lead program, NB1011, reached Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of colorectal cancer. In 2003, NewBiotics was acquired by the Japanese biotechnology firm Takara Bio, which integrated the ECTA technology into its oncology and gene therapy research programs.
