New England Nuclear (NEN) was a pioneering life sciences company specializing in the production of radioactive chemicals and radiopharmaceuticals for medical research and diagnosis. Founded in 1956, the company became the world's leading supplier of tritium and carbon-14 labeled compounds, which were essential for the development of modern drug metabolism studies. NEN is perhaps best known for developing Cardiolite (technetium Tc99m sestamibi), a gold-standard imaging agent for detecting coronary artery disease. The company was acquired by DuPont in 1981 for approximately $350 million, marking a significant consolidation in the nuclear medicine industry. Today, its legacy and core imaging products continue through Lantheus Medical Imaging, which emerged from the subsequent divestiture of DuPont's medical imaging business.
