Nexgen Spine

NexGen Spine was a medical device company specializing in the development of motion-preservation implants for the treatment of spinal disorders. Its flagship product, the iDisc, was an artificial spinal disc designed to replicate the natural biomechanics of a healthy human disc, including shock absorption and six degrees of freedom. Unlike many contemporary artificial discs that used ball-and-socket mechanisms, NexGen's technology utilized a compliant polycarbonate urethane core. The company's assets and technology were acquired by Stryker in 2010 to enhance its spinal implant portfolio. At the time of acquisition, the iDisc was undergoing clinical evaluation in the United States under an Investigational Device Exemption. The technology aimed to provide a more physiological solution for patients suffering from degenerative disc disease compared to traditional spinal fusion.
