Company intelligence / Profile preview
North American Heilmittel, Inc. was a pharmaceutical company based in Woodbury, New York, primarily focused on the clinical development and distribution of Ukrain (NSC-631570). Ukrain is a semi-synthetic alkaloid derivative of the plant Chelidonium majus, which was investigated for its potential to selectively induce apoptosis in cancer cells and modulate the immune system. The company worked closely with the drug's inventor, Dr. Wassil Nowicky, to advance the compound through clinical trials for various solid tumors, including pancreatic and colorectal cancers. However, the company encountered significant regulatory challenges, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other authorities raised concerns regarding the drug's safety, efficacy, and marketing status. Consequently, North American Heilmittel ceased its operations, and Ukrain remains an unapproved therapy in the United States. The company's legacy is primarily associated with the controversial history of alternative oncology treatments in the late 20th century.
