Northfield Laboratories

Northfield Laboratories was a U.S. biotechnology company focused on developing PolyHeme, a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier intended as a blood substitute for emergency treatment of severe blood loss and hemorrhagic shock. The company operated primarily as a single-asset developer in transfusion medicine and trauma care. PolyHeme advanced into Phase 3 clinical testing but failed to secure FDA approval after regulators concluded that its risks outweighed its benefits. Following the regulatory setback, Northfield shut down operations in 2009 and later entered liquidation. The company had been headquartered in Evanston, Illinois and was formerly listed on Nasdaq under the ticker NFLD.
