Norwich Pharmacal Company

Norwich Pharmacal Company was a significant American pharmaceutical firm founded in 1885 and headquartered in Norwich, New York. The company gained prominence for developing and marketing iconic consumer brands such as Pepto-Bismol and Unguentine, as well as pioneering research in nitrofuran chemistry which led to the antibacterial drug Furadantin. In 1969, it merged with Morton International to form Morton-Norwich Products, and its pharmaceutical division, Norwich-Eaton, was later acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1982. The company's legacy is defined by its transition from a small local pill manufacturer to a major contributor to both over-the-counter and prescription medicine markets.
