Novamont

Novamont has commercialized a range of biodegradable and compostable plastics and bio-based chemicals using proprietary industrial biotechnology. Its flagship products include the Mater-Bi family of materials used in packaging, agriculture, waste collection, retail bags, food service items, and more. The company operates several production sites in Italy and Estonia with global distribution in over 40 countries[1][2].

It does not have clinical results as it does not operate in drug development.

Notably, its Mater-Biotech plant was the world’s first to produce butanediol from sugars via fermentation at industrial scale[3].

In October 2023 it became part of Versalis (Eni), a major Italian chemical company[2].

The company also owns BioBag International since 2021—a leader in certified compostable products—and co-founded MaterAgro to promote sustainable agriculture solutions[2].

R&D collaborations span academic institutions and industry consortia focused on the circular bioeconomy.
