NPS Allelix

NPS Pharmaceuticals, formerly known as NPS Allelix, was a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing therapies for rare gastrointestinal and endocrine diseases. Formed by the 1999 merger of NPS Pharmaceuticals and Allelix Biopharmaceuticals, the company leveraged expertise in calcium-sensing receptors and peptide hormones. Its commercial portfolio featured Gattex for short bowel syndrome and Natpara for hypoparathyroidism, both of which addressed significant unmet medical needs. Additionally, the company's research led to the development of Sensipar, a successful treatment for hyperparathyroidism licensed to Amgen. In 2015, Shire acquired NPS Pharmaceuticals for approximately $5.2 billion, and its assets were subsequently integrated into Takeda following Shire's acquisition.
