Nycomed Imaging

Nycomed Imaging was a pioneering Norwegian pharmaceutical company that specialized in the development of contrast agents for medical imaging. The company is best known for inventing iohexol (Omnipaque), which became the world's most widely used non-ionic X-ray contrast medium. Following a merger with Amersham in 1997, the entity became Nycomed Amersham and later Amersham Health. In 2004, the business was acquired by GE Healthcare, where it now forms the basis of the Pharmaceutical Diagnostics division. The company's legacy products remain gold standards in diagnostic radiology, including computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Its contributions significantly advanced the safety and efficacy of diagnostic procedures globally. Today, the Oslo-based facilities continue to be a major manufacturing and R&D hub for GE Healthcare's imaging agent portfolio.
