Obtech Medical was a Swiss medical device company focused on developing minimally invasive surgical treatments for morbid obesity. Its primary product, the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band (SAGB), became a leading laparoscopic solution for weight loss surgery globally. The company was acquired by Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson & Johnson company, in 2002 to expand their bariatric surgery portfolio. This acquisition allowed Johnson & Johnson to compete directly in the adjustable gastric band market against competitors like BioEnterics. The SAGB technology was integrated into Ethicon's global distribution network, significantly increasing its clinical adoption. The device works by creating a small gastric pouch to limit food intake and induce satiety.
