Ocean Era

Ocean Era develops and operates offshore mariculture systems for sustainable fish farming. The company has pioneered open-ocean aquaculture projects in Hawaii and the Gulf of Mexico, including pilot-scale operations such as Velella Epsilon. They focus on reducing environmental impact by using alternative feed sources and advanced monitoring to ensure sustainability.

Their research includes eliminating marine-sourced inputs from fish diets by using poultry meal, soy proteins, flax oil, and omega-3 oils from microalgae. They have demonstrated that offshore aquaculture can minimize ecosystem impacts compared to nearshore operations.

The Velella Epsilon project was the first proposed commercial-scale finfish farm in U.S. federal waters.
