Oculex Pharmaceuticals

Oculex Pharmaceuticals was a specialty biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of site-specific, sustained-release drug delivery systems for the treatment of eye diseases. The company's primary innovation was the Posurdex platform, a biodegradable polymer implant designed to deliver therapeutic agents directly to the retina. This technology addressed the challenge of delivering drugs to the posterior segment of the eye, which is often inaccessible via traditional eye drops. Oculex's lead product candidate, a dexamethasone intraocular implant, was in Phase 3 clinical trials for macular edema at the time of the company's acquisition. In 2003, Allergan acquired Oculex for approximately $230 million to expand its ophthalmic portfolio. The acquisition successfully led to the commercialization of Ozurdex, which is now a standard treatment for various retinal conditions.
