Odontis

Odontis was a London-based biotechnology company dedicated to the field of regenerative dentistry, specifically focusing on the creation of bioengineered teeth. A spin-out from King's College London, the company leveraged the research of Professor Paul Sharpe to develop a method for growing new teeth from a patient's own stem cells. The technology involved the assembly of mesenchymal and epithelial cells into a tooth primordium, which could then be implanted into the gum to develop into a natural tooth. Although the company attracted significant venture capital and grant funding, it ceased operations and was dissolved in 2011. The work of Odontis laid the groundwork for subsequent research into biological tooth replacement.
