Olympus-Cytori

Olympus-Cytori was a joint venture established in 2005 between Olympus Corporation and Cytori Therapeutics to develop and commercialize regenerative medicine technologies. The partnership focused on the Celution System, a medical device designed to automate the extraction and concentration of adult stem and regenerative cells from a patient's own adipose tissue at the point of care. These adipose-derived regenerative cells (ADRCs) were investigated for a wide range of clinical applications, including cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and reconstructive surgery. The venture successfully achieved CE Mark and other regulatory clearances for the Celution System in several global markets, enabling its use in Europe and Japan. In 2011, Cytori Therapeutics acquired Olympus's 50% stake in the joint venture for approximately $11 million to consolidate its commercial rights and streamline operations. Following the acquisition, the joint venture's activities were integrated into Cytori's broader regenerative medicine business, which later rebranded as Plus Therapeutics.
