OmegaTech

OmegaTech was a pioneering biotechnology company based in Boulder, Colorado, that specialized in the development of algae-derived omega-3 fatty acids. Founded in 1987, the company developed a proprietary fermentation process to produce docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from microalgae, providing a sustainable and vegetarian alternative to traditional fish oil. Its flagship product, DHA Gold, was widely adopted for use in infant formula, dietary supplements, and functional foods to support brain and heart health. In 2002, OmegaTech was acquired by Martek Biosciences for approximately $50 million, a strategic move that consolidated the algal DHA market. Following subsequent acquisitions, the company's technology and intellectual property are now part of the dsm-firmenich portfolio.
