Optobionics

Optobionics was a medical technology company focused on the development of the Artificial Silicon Retina (ASR), a subretinal microchip designed to treat vision loss. The ASR device was intended for patients suffering from outer retinal degenerations, such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, by stimulating remaining functional retinal cells. The company reached Phase II clinical trials, where the implant demonstrated safety and signs of visual improvement in some patients. Despite its early innovation in retinal prosthetics, Optobionics faced significant financial hurdles and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2007. Its assets and intellectual property were subsequently acquired by a private investment group to continue the technology's development.
